Almost summer

Well it may be that summer is almost here. After a day of grey clouds and threatened rain the sky is now clear and blue in the mid evening and we are promised hot weather for the weekend.

The rain and muggy weather has done things to the veg patch over the last few days and it is almost obscene with growth everything falling over the other as it tries to get bigger. After weeks of looking a failure the courgette plants have taken over and overspilled their narrow stripe of ground. I walked down there this evening and under the leaves I spotted the yellow burst of their first flowers. I could not resist picking one and eating it down.

It was August last year I had my last courgette flower and by way of a small celebration here are some pictures of me eating it.

There will be more of these over the next few weeks!

Matthew E White

I should briefly mention Matthew E White who some of us went to see in Leaf last night.

After the hushed reverence that was Lambchop last week it was good to see a proper band making some noise.

Given the size of the place and what sounds like a full orchestra and choir that plays on the record I was not sure what to expect. As it was there were six of them on stage including a pedal steel and a proper drummer.

Matthew E White complied with the no fiddling/changing guitar rule to the letter. When a guitar string broke he carried on playing and at the end of the song spent a few seconds retuning before cracking on with the next song.

It all brought a smile to my face and that doesn’t happen often.
